Soft pastel on paper

Today I went with The Sydney Sketchers to Ashfield Park. We are going to try to do suburbs of Sydney going from A – Z sketching in a suburb starting with that letter of the alphabet that we are up to. This being the first meetup for the year, we start with A for Ashfield. We went to Ashfield park, where there are numerous monuments, statues, special trees and buildings. I concentrated a bit on the Mary Poppins statue in the Childrens playground area, but also did a strange ride that was there as well as some deap palm fronds which I found to be a good subject.
Here are the results
The Archibald art prize is a prestigious award for portraits held each year and exhibited at the art gallery of NSW Sydney. The sketch group that I am a part of, was inspired to do our own portraits for the alternative archies.
Here are 2 I did in record time. One is a contour line drawing done with a 0.4 gel pen. The other a mixed media of watercolour pencil, wet then layered with soft pastel. Very experimental.
Inspired by the Paul Klee work called “The twittering machine” and Leonardo da Vinci’s helicopter and parachute designs; I combined these with a corkscrew and the central mechanism of egg beaters to come up with an imaginary machine designed to teach orphaned birds to fly.
You turn the corkscrew handle which winds the egg beater mechanism until the machine spins slowly and detaches from the tree to float softly to the ground. The idea is to place the birds on the platform and when it starts spinning, the will be scared and jump off, prompting them to learn how to fly…similar to a mother pushing them from a nest.
Totally fictious and non practical but fun. This is my final work for 2d drawing for this semester.
Despite the tragic event that happened in our city just a week ago, Christmas goes on. Today I was in Pitt St Mall, surrounded by thousands of shoppers. The Sydney Sketch club went to sketch the Lego Christmas tree and the atmosphere around. Here are my humble contributions. I shall post photos that I took later
