Dame Mary Gilmore “Old Botany Bay”

What aspects of Australian History are important to Gilmore’s Poetry? How does she manage to express so much with so few words?

Gilmore looks at history through the eyes of others. She sees history of an Aboriginal man, as a mother sending her sons to war, as a pioneer- set to tame the landscape. But the rugged and untamed bush was to be conquered by man yet! Although man himself feels conquered and the bush lives on.

But through all that happens, the sun still rises and sets; on everyone. Trees grow, and life goes on.
